The Government of Saskatchewan has spotlighted lithium as the newest commodity set to diversify the province's mining sector, with Prairie Lithium front and centre. The Regina-based company completed Saskatchewan's first-ever dedicated lithium brine well in fall 2021, a drilling program that supported more than 100 jobs across 40 companies. Its Emerald Park pilot facility demonstrated extraction of 99.7 per cent of lithium from brine in a matter of minutes.

The release highlights strong policy tailwinds: Prairie Lithium qualified for the Saskatchewan Advantage Innovation Fund and the Saskatchewan Petroleum Innovation Incentive, while lithium-focused subsurface mineral public offerings raised over $4.2 million for the province in 2021. Then-Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre noted global lithium demand was expected to grow five-fold by 2030, positioning Saskatchewan to capitalise.
